  • Logical explanation for the 04 SV?

I headed down to my local dealer to pick some oil and a filter. While I was shooting the shit with my sales guy (also a TLS owner) I asked about the 04 SV’s. While he didn’t have a straight answer he did mention that the ‘03’s were sort of a ‘late’ model and a lot of them were produced. Enough to spill over into the ‘04 model year making the ‘03 and ‘04 models virtually the same.

This would also explain Suzuki’s lack of any real answer. ‘Lets sweep it under the rug and hope no one notices’ sort of thing. Anyway, this gives us over a year now to speculate and dream of the SVR.

That would make alot of sense. I've seen plenty of 03's sitting in showrooms every time I went. If you look around you'll also notice the drop in prices in used sv's. I've even seen new 03 1000's going on ebay for $1000 under msrp (from dealers).

Looks like the big S flooded the market.

One thing I have seen, especially noticeable on the sv board is that none of the first gen owners are trading in for new ones; maybe a few are going to the 1000, but most owners of the 03's are first time sv owners.

wouldnt the date on the vin still be in 03? they would have to sell it as an 03 model

That is a very good question.
What they might be up to (this is just speculation on my part, don't even know if it is legal) is that they are holding completed bikes at the factory and waiting until they can put '04 vins on them before shipping out. This is based on the assumption that they only have to put vins and that type of information when the bike leaves the plant, not when it is finished being built. But this is just a guess...

Actually, the way it used to work, if the production date was in the second half of the year, it could be considered the next model year. For instance, if you see an SV on the floor with a mfg date of 9/1/03, it would probably be listed as an '04.

and even if it is "last years" there's no law that says a dealer has to discount the price.

As for increased production not meeting demand... are any of you old enough to remember when Kawi & Suzuki made a kabillion Kz & GS 550's back in 1982/83? when I bought my 82 KZ in 84 there were a dozen just like it on the showroom floor. And the dealer was in no hurry to discount the price either.

no, there isn't...but dealers have to pay flooring on all machines, not to mention the factory incentives (salesman bonuses, discounting, etc) to sell off last years models. but if someone is willing to pay retail...the dealer isn't gonna volunteer the discounts. if springtime comes and a dealer has distressed merchandise on the floor and its costing them money to keep it...they'll take a loss on it, as a last resort. picking up an 03 SV in the sping of 04, when its been sitting there since december of 02...at that point they're just looking to move product.

The crappy part is that it will probably be a really good bike, just not one that anybody wants.

From what I have seen at the dealers, ebay, and cycletrader is that the prices on new SV's keep dropping.

Dont know about over in the US but here in Scotland my local dealer told me that Suzuki ran out of 600 bandits so flooded them with sv's instead 650's and 1000's. This ended up meaning that a stock sv650 was reduced 1000 pounds nearly 1200 dollars i think. Now all these bikes have actually stayed the same with the Bandits being priced higher than em. Confuses me a bit so im sorry if this dont make much sense. But its close to New Year here and there's been a few drinks consumed
