  • When It Rains It Pours

    I guess my tale begins 1 week ago when I decided to show my TL1000S some much deserved love (I don't own a cage, only two or three bikes of which my TL is the everyday machine as well as my weekend warrior). The two areas in which I was never one-hundred percent happy with my TL were the brakes and the fact that she takes a few turns to start. So last weekend I did the plugs, oil, filter, chain, sprockets (17 42), front tire (michelin pilot sport) and upgraded my brake calipers and mastercyclinder to some TLR units with 98% new high quality pads. Cost me about $1000AU. I also spent some time setting up the suspension (I already use a 180 rear, which helps, but I dropped the tripleclamps about 5mm) She already had a Yoshi system and K&N filter. As you can imagine I was keen to go for a strap on my refreshed TLS. So I headed out to the backroads in the Adelaide hills to give her a go. I loved it......

    Until in the middle of nowhere the engine suddenly stopped (when I was doing about 220! I was glad about the slipper clutch!). When I restarted her she was clunking a bit up in the rev range so I tried to baby her to the next town but she seized soon after (front piston).
    It was 2:30am. I didn't know where I was (I hadn't lost sense of directions though). It was pitch black. I got off my bike and it started to pour down with rain. Around four hours later I finished my trek to the nearest town (up hill and down dale in full leathers through constant rain). On the way eight vehicles ignored my attempts to flag them down and even drove around me honking. At 7:10 am I caught the bus home.
    As I write this my bike is still out there (I hope).

    The only good thing in all this is that I guess it's time for engine work. Who here has done a rebuild. Any reccomendations for manufacturers etc?

      if what you say is true, I truly feel for you..

      I almost ran out of gas 2 miles from a gas station and felt a little helpless. If I ever get to AU, the next beer (fosters) is on me

        Sorry to hear about your bike.

        So what is up with those people who did not help you. I thought you down under types were more friendly than the average American. From what you described, you might as well been in downtown Los Angeles.

              That's a long night. No one stopped? That really sucks bigtime. It will be interesting to see what a tear down of the motor reveals. You might not need to go to the trouble of a major rebuild.

                if you figure out how to make your bike start on its first attempt, let me know! Please! I would like mine to start first time too!

                  Try cracking that throttle a tiny bit. Seems to help on mine. Also, perhaps the cold start fast idle is not set fast enough. You can adjust it right there at the lever.

                      Bad luck m8!!!

                      I just crack the throttle a bit ans she fires up first time, then pull the fast idle. Good Scottish air of course.

                          That is one shitty story you need to go get your ride. Cannot offer any advice but you will find it here eventually.

                            Rebuild?

                            The bike has about 56000kms on the clock. Prior to this I hadn't noticed any unusual noises, vibrations etc. I picked up my bike yesterday arvo and externally everything looks fine. I rang all the workshops in my area to get opinions and rough estimates on pricing etc and they all indicated that hopefully it was just a dropped valve but said that from my descripition of the siezing it may be a big end bearing (I'll find out for sure tomorrow) in which case I'm probably better off getting a replacement engine from a wrecker. Due to the relatively low numbers of TL's around here I'd probably get it cheaper interstate. Anyone here from the eastern states know which wreckers to try? I thought TL motors were meant to be tough, has anyone else had their engine sieze?

                              I know exactly how you feel man. Siezed mine up out in the middel of nowhere a couple weeks back. Nice part is my buddy came and picked me and the bike up. Mine's my daily as well. I'm just happy I'm still alive and didn't get locked up that night. Long story... Mine droped the oil filter though. I'm gona have mine out tomarrow and torn down to see what the damage is.
