  • R vs. S motor differences?

Besides the higher compresion, different piston processing and cam grinds, was there any other differences between the 2 motors internaly? Were the heads any different, cranks, etc... Reason I ask is, I'm looking at an S motor to replace the one I seized up in my R. Obviously, the compresion is going to be different, but I was thinking of swapaing the cams and accessories from my R into said S motor for now until I can afford a piston kit. Anything, I should know of otherwise that may hinder compatability? I appreciate any light you could shine on the subject. Thanks

The "S" has a cable set-up for clutch actuation, but all the TLR hydraulic stuff will bolt up.

Depending what year "S" the clutches got changed, if it is a 5 spring unit, just swap the whole thing over for the 6 springer out of your "R".

You'll have to swap the water pump covers over and buy some bolts / bungs to bolck the TLS oil cooler entry and exits from the block. The TLR waterpump has an extra outlet for the watercooled oil cooler of the "R"

That's about it for now. If I remember more I'll repost.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but have been told that the cam gears and idler gears have different pitch between the S and R. So if you're going to use you're R cams in an S motor, You may need the R idler gears as well

I'm looking at possibly having to swap an R motor into an S. I actually prefer a cable clutch but I gather from the previous posts that I'll need to swap to hydraulic? Also do I need the water cooled oil cooler from the R or would the TLS one do the job?

Joric, several have put R's into S's.

You'll have to use the S throttle bodies and ECU unless you want to hack into the frame.

You can put the cable clutch stuff onto the R engine.

As far as the oil cooler goes, all you have to do is use the R set-up as is, but you'll have to get an extra outlet fitted to your radiator for the water / oil heat exchanger and do away with the "S" air / oil cooler.

I'm guessing you could fit an "S" oil cooler to an "R" engine but you'll probably have to tap the engine case in the same spot where the "S" is for the oil lines and then fit the "S" water pump cover, or block the extra outlet up. :dunno Maybe the galleries are already tapped but plugged?
