  • Steering damper question for yall

Who has replaced thiers, what brand did you swap out with, and how do you like it?

After my track day at Jennings on Sat, I need to swap out. Talking to another guy who used to have one. He confirmed my feelings the stock one (even with lighter fluid) is still slowing the steering down.

    Anyone selling one?

BTW, I was stuck behind a new SV1000 for a couple turns every 3rd lap or so. Those things do have some decent motor.

On the street I run without a damper and it is great. I've got the forks through the triples approximately another 6mm over stock. It handles significantly better, get waggle from the bars as you would expect. Stability is great, not a single slapper and the front end seems stable under braking (no chatter), however the stock forks are a little on the soft side.

If I was to get a replacement steering damper I would be going with the Hyperpro. Cheaper than Ohlins and provide easier steering.

I don't know your riding style TL-R1000, but at least my TLS there is always that feel when landing power wheelies that the slapper is so close but damper takes care of it... Just little feeling through the bars.

It hits you when you least expect it...it is TL's nature, it cannot help that...

I swear by my Scott's (magic) gold box... and I got rid of the rear rotary for an Ohlins
        Just a few mods:

        Silver, the fastest color!

On the inside - HID type bulbs, K&N filter, Iridium ix plugs, 16T front sprocket, Coerce billet sprocket cover, Yosh re-map +5, +5, +5 11 o'clock, Scorpio SE-i500 system from my GB and an ATRE.

On the outside - TLR forks, front carbon fender, 5/8th master brake cylinder, black SS brake lines (frnt & rear), braking waves all around with Ti bolts, Brembo gold front calipers & a busa gold rear caliper, flush mount signals (frnt & rear), ZG DB scr

I think you'll find the TLS's suspension and chassis set up is not near as stable as the TLR. I've been driving hard out of turns with the front lifting, power-wheelieing aroudn the place in 1st and second and never anything more than light waggling as the front wheel loses contact (therefore losing gyroscopic effect of spinning while the tyre is on the ground).

wasnt it only the TLS that had the tankslapping problems..

so suzuki in their infinite wisdom added it to the TLR just in case the same happened..

It just so happens i was reading about it last night...

On test on track before the sale of TLS no damper...went on sale..only problem was TLS did not behave the same on roads( cats eyes, bumps etc) and the result was lots of people binning their babies due to big tank slappers..

Which ened in a recall to fit steering dampers...

I am still running the stock damper at the moment,,but it sucks..very heavy and slow..

Itching to give it a try without, (should a smilie for no-balls )
cant afford aftermarket at the moment

                Is that from experience

                Do you ride without it...?
i am convinced that it is only the extra lively TLS that needs it....

                And TLR is more stable...

                I am thinking about it.....

Well, dampers are maditory in CCS/WERA, so removal is not an option for me since the TLR is primarily a racebike....

I have had oscelations coming out of certain turns at various times, and the scariest was a little bit a tank slapper as I came out of the chicane onto the banking at Daytona. Quite the eye opener.

I have found that when I raise the forks to compensate for the slow steering (partially caused by drag of the stock damper), the front wants to wallow a bit. I have spoke to another who had the same problems. The Ohlins internals over the winter should help this as well as the damper, allowing the forks to be lowered a bit.

And trust me, the bike needs help on the suspension side. My F3 was like a hot razor through butter, where as the TLR is currently like a spoon through peanut butter. The TLR just needs help to mak it sharpe to bend into to turns.

Ive been riding without without one for a while and my bike is rocksteady even at topspeed even though I have raised rideheight considerably. The TLR really doesn´t need a damper IMO, however I have fitted the stocker back w/ 2.5 oil in it and it works fine on the street at least, slightly heavier steering than without damper but now I have the "insurance" of a damper just in case....

How long did the 2.5 oil change take? Did you run into any problems? I am thinking about doing that this weekend.

Takes 30 minutes maybe to remove the damper, empty it, refill it and mount it back.

I run a Hyperpro on my TLS and love it. It's much better tahn stock and adjustable..

One word of warning, do NOT buy a Storz damper.. they are crap, go into heat related hydraulic lock and are dangerous..
