  • TL1000R VS. 600's

Ok guys, forgive me but I am new to the TL1000R and you all have great info. I almost bought a 98' ZX9R but opted for the 99' TL1000R instead for the same price. Yes the ZX9 is faster but the TL1000R looks awesome. Help me here, I know most racing depends on the rider combined with power but if two comperable riders went head to head, how do our TL1000R's compare to the new 600's, I'm sure that we are faster but by how much. All stock on both bikes, no mods. I know the TL1000R is a litre bikes but I think it is in the back of the pack as far as big bore litre bikes go. SO I'm just curious how or where we measure up without mods. Should I just forget about the 600's and worry about the R1's, 929RR's etc? I have had no chances to get it on with anyone other than a ZX9, and he was ahead but not by a whole lot. Lets hear some info. Thanks and this board has been helpful. you guys rock!

Is there any money on the line? If not, don't worry about it and have fun..

TL's will pull 600's pretty easy, I wouldn't get into a short track race with them, though. They are still a lot lighter and the 2003 600's make more power than ever.
I've got a huge penis, You've got a huge penis, even Tim over there, yup you guessed it, huge penis. Good, now that that's out of the way, let's go ride

I think that it also depends on what kind of racing you're talking about. I have no problems at all on short tracks, but tracks that have long straight aways (Cali AMA) always seems to allow them to catch up. At the streets of Willow, I had no problem at all keeping them behind me.

depends on the course. open courses with fast sweepers would lean towards the liter bike (even though heavier) whereas tight small tracks would favor the 600. the big displacement of a twin doesnt help much if you dont have the room to use it.

ummm, my riding bud has a new 03 r6 with everything done to it, and he can pull me a little up top, but not down low, also hes 40 lbs lighter. but i have yet to have mine tuned right,a nd other fun stuff. mines stock except full race yosh system, and 40t rear sprocket and iridium plugs.... 120hp 74 tq, and on the same dyno within minutes he pulled 109hp.....

doing roll ons with new 600s, you will occasionally get passed up. its true

nail it out of a turn or from low speeds and you will swash 'em like a bug.

i have drag raced (at a track) many a new 600s lately. it takes a 8500 rpm launch and nads way bigga than mine to beat my 97 tls with my pansy 4500 rpm launches

It takes a better and more aggressive rider to manage the high strung 600.

They can literally run rings around us with their weightless handling though. I have not ridden a new 600, but the R1 I rode felt like a flyweight toy to me. I about rode off the inside of the first few corners I took on it. Given that, I can only imagine what a new 600 is like. Just think about turning and it is turning, some effort required at the shift lever.

The TL is the opposite. You gotta turn the beast, but not much thought on the shift lever is required

yep, TL is really easy to get out of corners, because the power is everywhere, it doesn't matter if you are one gear too high. Even with in line 1000cc it matters more. Also it's easy to drive corners with low revs, even 4000, and it when the straight opens, it accelerates nicely.

600 makes you better track driver, because you learn to use gears.(every track session makes you better, even with 125)

I take no liability if someone burns up his/her TL with Jarkko/Sparkko/plus mod It's safe if it's done right....

Those 600's are pumping out mid 40's in the torque department.

That sucks. My friend had a 00' ZX-6R and now a 636. Its gutless till about 9000 rpm. I can really put the smack down on him if he isnt ringing the hell out of that thing.

                  600's suck.

I find it a little frustrating that one of the latest 600s would give a TL a run for its money all the way through the gears

Even some of the latest twins have trouble! A zx636 was timed by a magazine, 0-150mph 17.3 seconds. RSV1000 0-150mph 19seconds. Both tests were conducted at different times so conditions may have been different? I think with a big head wind or up a steep hill a sports 600 may have more trouble as it has less torque......but it does have lower gearing?

Straightline speed means nothing without a good rider on board so really it don't matter.

A gearbox is a torque multiplier, and to take advantage of the maximum output of the engine it is attached to it would be geared differently.

                            Progress happens. Once on my '85 GPz550 I stomped a guy on a '78 CB750. The current 600's would destroy an '86 gsxr1100..

Don't be hung up on #'s because they don't frickin matter unless you're complying with a race association's Rules, or bench racing.

Rossi & a Ninja 250 will still beat me and my TL around turns. If you're always after the bestest and the fastest you're in the wrong place because twin's just aren't it, and never really were. The only reason they were/are sucessfull in racing is because of rules.

That said.. I love mine and it's perfect for what I want. I don't wanna spin the hell out of it and I don't wanna tiny bike. I wanna be a little lazy (lovin the torque) and have fun. I'm not racing.

                              Very true.

My legs make more torque riding my pushbike than an R1 but I cant spin my legs around 12500 times per minute. As a result of this I can only achieve speeds of around 30mph as opposed 170mph.

revs achieved and gear ratios pay a bigger role in performance than people think!
