  • AFM/Buttonwillow Calif races this weekend

    Hi all,

I'm going to be at the AFM races this coming weekend (Sept 6-7) with my endurance bike. Is anyone on the board going to be there?

It's a Suzuki money weekend and I've been noticing that there are VERY few TL's running in the AFM Formula Twins open class. Hmm....

i think there's 3 TL's running AFM OT including mine. it's mostly RC's and ducs. i think jon bawden is the top TL right now. i dunno his lap times @ BW but i suspect very close if not under 2 flats.

check for kurt spencer though. #635. he's planning on his newly aquired SV1k and he's the current 650TW pts. leader. assuming he gets it ready in time. should be yellow w/ twinworks stickers on it.

i won't make BW. no $ and bike hasn't been touched/repaired since june when i binned it @ thill. won't make it to vegas either. i'll probably run the last sears race and retire the TL or sell it as a parts bike. i'm not close to the running for contingency since my TL's a 98 and my lap times are horrendeous. so no point hoping for anything remotely looking like cash going my way from racing anytime soon. unless i run CCS Pac w/ other novices.

surprising to see ya doing BW though. isn't that a bit of a drive for ya? i'm assuming you're trailering it all the way from CO. any particular reason?

Yeah, I noticed that. Sorry you won't be there. I'm probably going to pit with Rob Mesa & Kim Nakashima so hopefully they'll give me some tips on the track.

I will. Do you know why he's racing a SV1K? As best as I can tell, they're basically a VStrom with different wheels & bodywork which didn't seem to be much of a racebike platform.

I'm in Sandy Eggo right now visiting my parents and it just happen to fit into my vacation plans. Plus, I started my racing career (if you can call it that) back in 1989 with the AFM when people like Joe Brett Williams and Scott Gray dominated. Rob Mesa is a long time good racing friend and it's good to get back and see people like him, Joe Montoya, Ross Wells, etc.

he doesn't like the TL + it's available for contingency which he'd be eligible for. chassis is comparable to the new SV than the garbage they use for the vstrom.

showin your age are ya? j/k i like BW though i haven't been there in over a yr. you should be able to clock in under 2:10's there.

so you trailered your ride all the way there?

I'm hoping for better than 2:10's or it's gonna be a lot of from Mesa. I guess we'll see.

I did trailer all the way out. I have an 18' weekend warrior and I brought the bike, a generator, canopy, carpet, a roll around tool box, spare wheels, tires, parts, etc.

Truth be told, I'm kinda hoping for rain. I don't know if the AFM races in the rain there, but if they do, I'm ready for it. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be mid 90's F and sunny. We'll see!!

nope, no rain races. kinda sucky cause there's alot to be learned from riding in teh wet but there's no way, esp. @ sears, that AFM would allow racing in the rain. BW...i haven't seen any evidence that there's remotely any water around there that isn't irrigated/piped in.

you going to try for FP too? or just OT? if you show em your laptimes from practice, they should allow you to run FP...assuming you registered for it. if you can do sub 2 flats i'll be wildly impressed.

                  wish i could join ya

Just a followup, I did do the Buttonwillow AFM races the weekend before last. I did pretty well in practice and 750 superbike, but I crashed in Formula old fart.

I completely wadded my endurance bike, but my wife got some video and Gary Rather got a pretty good photo sequence of my crash. If you want to see the carnage and aftermath, go to
http://www.bigstickracing.com/ and under Race Reports .. click on the Buttonwillow AFM event.

I was able to do a 1:53.646 in 750 Superbike (here are the results), which I think would have put me in the hunt for a Formula Twins Open win. Bummer I crashed

i tried to watch the video of the crash, but it doesn't actually show you crashing . it just shows you hauling ass and then it pans to some guys sleeve on his shirt.........maybe its just my stupid computer.

Actually, I crash just as my wife was panning across the pillar in the foreground. If you look closely, you'll see something sliding behing the guy that was in front of me .. then there's a huge cloud of dirt and my lower jetting up skyward. Understandably, my wife couldn't keep filming when she figured out it was me.

ok, that makes sence........i didn't realize it was your wife filming. i'm suprised the camera didn't get launched out of the tower.

about 10yrs ago when i was into racing my partner was flying into turn 12 on his RS250b honda and the motor seized up causing a nasty high side.......the crash was so violent it broke the frame in half . that is a real fast section to go down in.......glad you came out ok.

Glad you're ok.. Glad they had enough run off for 'ya. It's not the fall, it's running into something off track that breaks us....

(I did the same speed crash in Turn 1 at Willow once.. , but thanks to leathers and the right equipment I didn't get hurt either.)
