  • Which octane to use?

    Hey fellas,

    I have a 99 b/w TLR and have a full M4 with a power commander 2.

So what I'm wondering is, what octane should I run. I could run 89 without any affects and I just tried it in my TLR, knocks like crazy, unless something is wrong(I'll find out tomorrow when I commute to work with fresh gas).

What are you running and what do you think I should run?

    Thanks!

Why be cheap with this part of your bike? What's another $1.00 for the good stuff every fill up

Low octane bad , there's a reason why it's cheap. Put that crap in your car. Where'd you get the 89 from? My book says 90 or higher. Put 100 octane in is some time and see how she runs and smells. Nothing smells better than high octane fuel.
Don't know how it works? Take it apart and find out!

      Here's how it sounds.

TLR has what, like 11.5:1 compression ratio...In my opinion that=93 octane nothing lower. Try running 87 or 89 in a car engine with 11:1 and it will ping all day...if not blow a hole in a piston.

Sweet tl1000r I have the same set-up as you and run 93 with no pinging or other drive troubles.

manual says minimum of 91 octane. that's what i run.

if not pump gas. some nice nutec sp4 always hits the spot. i woudln't buy it for anything other than racing though. $15/gal

ever see that little yellow sticker on a pump (in the states at least) that says + or -2 rms?

that means it is legal for that 93 octane you are pumping to be anywhere from 91-93 octane. i still use super unleaded (around 93 oct here), but just something to think about.

I run Mobile 93 or Sunoco 94. Im getting 47 to50 MPG and can not see any reason to save $.40 per fill up. I put 2 gallons of Cam II (yup 110 Octane) in the bike after the fuel light was on for 15 or so miles and the throttle response was amazing, but not as much of a power gain as I was hoping for...But gotta love the race track smell

I will also add that the bike did not start as good as normal until I filled it up the next time with 93. I had not heard that running Cam II or higher in a bike would hurt anything...Hope Not!

You boys must have pretty crap fuel in the states! What's going on there!

Our regular unleaded is around 92, some premium unleaded's are around 96, Shell's optimax and Mobile's Vortex and BP's fuels are around 98 octane!

A couple of days ago there was a similar thread like this one and there someone said that octane is measured differently in the US of A.
The lowest we can get is 95...
Unless you go to the Czech Republic (91) or Russia (89) and such.
