  • broke a rearset today

went riding in the mountains today, had a good ride, then on the way home i was stuck in traffice on the interstate and pulled a little wheelie next to my friend and the left peg fell off. pretty embarrasing in rush hour traffic.

the bike had been crashed before i bought it and the prev owner welded the left rearset together. it didnt look too bad, so i didnt worry about it.

i was about 15 miles from my friends house so i stuck it in second with a pair of pliers and road the rest of the way at about 50 mph with my left heel stuck ontop of the heel guard. i am sure we looked silly going 50 mph on the interstate with full leathers...school buses and everything else zooming past...

luckily i have a rearset from an srad 750 so i wont have to wait for the part...

definitely, but it wasnt like stand up 10 mile wheelie. wheelie was a strong word for what it was. it was like goose it at 10 mph pop it up 6 inches kind of bored in traffic joke wheelie.

and i am sure i have a little squid in me, but we rode the "pace" in the mountains all day, no high speed silliness, and didnt pass on double yellows or anything.

i thought we were doing good, and then i got the instant karma thing

          indeed.

Glad you had a spare local and didn't have to wait. If you had the spare, why didn't you put it on in the first place!

Welding die-cast aluminum is a bit of a gamble due to the porosity of the material. Most of the part's strength is on the outer surface where the material is most dense. I've been tempted to try to repair such parts this way, but it's a bit too dodgy to trifle with. As you found out...

TLSBILL : i guess i didnt put it on there bc the SRAD one doesnt quite match. it only uses the bottom 2 bolts.. i will see how it looks today and if it looks silly i may start looking on ebay for a tlr one. or maybe some aftermarket rearsets. but i am usually a function over flash guy so it is a bit out of character to have a crappy welded together rearset when i have a better one...

Seca: I lurk over at GSB sometimes, usually not much of a poster here or anywhere but i got laid off last week so i got time on my hands. I live in Lawrenceville for now but i am at my girlfriends in Kennesaw at least half the time. do you do the Vortex thing on thursdays? I have the ugly all black tiller with d & d pipes on it. i am there about eveyr thurs it doesnt rain. i used to live about 1/4 mile from ellsworth, but nobody seems to go there anymore..

and to think all of the times i wasnt just going 10 mph when it could have decided to break, like say when i was in a turn all leaned over with alot of weight on the outside peg....

If you push the limits you should never have a half a** part like that on your bike! You got lucky!
