  • What does NOS smell like?

OK, I'm on an offramp entering the highway, there is a bright red Mistu 3000GT VR4 behind me, as soon as we enter the highway and 2 lanes are available, the car behind me passes me like a bat out of hell. I notice a strange colored smoke coming from his pipes and the odor is something I've never smelled before. I catch up to him in a couple of seconds and notice it again, he starts to pull away very quickly, same smoke out the pipes again and that odor.

Again I reel him in, but I notice the highway in front of us is clear, so I pass him and keep going. About a mile later, I look in my mirrors and see him coming up real fast, I don't even let him catch up and put at least 8 car lenghts between us. I didn't see him after that. I think I spooked him when I passed because I was nearly at redline and his windows were down, so he definately got a good earful of TLR-M4 grunt

But back to my original question, what does NOS smell like? I think that car was on the bottle

Disclaimer; I don't condone street racing

There is no distinct smell w/ NOS. There is usually more of a fuel smell if it is a wet system, but the smell shouldn't be from the NOS.

Could have been race gas-very distinct smell...

I got blown away in my mustang by a ford lightning...I too noticed that distinct smell. I tracked down who owned it and, my mechanic friend verified that he had installed NO2 on that Lightning.

BTW: NOS is a complany that makes NO2 bottles and kits....it is called Nitrous Oxide or NO2 for the chemists.

And it is not flamible, most people don't know that.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

I thought Nitrous had a sulfer smell to it.

Race gas smells so much better than regular gas

True, but it does make the intake air very cold and dense, and as you very well know, oxygen is flamable. That's where you get your BIG BANG

I wanna see a pic of that TLR with those sweet sounding M4's redlining past that Mitsu.

Nevermind, just get me a sound bite of it

The idea be hind NOS (Nitrious Oxide) is to add more oxygen. Hence the Oxide. If I remember my chem right the suffix "ide" means three...it's been a few years...so instead of normal atmospearic oxygen (O2), there is an extra O molecule. More oxygen means requires more fuel, which means more power. I think the bottle is cheating. Takes talent to get tons of H.P. out of a normally asparatied engine. Anyone can run a few lines, wire some solinoids and mount some hardware. Skilled engine tuners/builders are hard to come by.

Oh yeah, you know when a car is on the bottle. We made some NOS in chem once. There was no combustion, but this crap is nasty. Kids these days inhale this crap to get high (whippet). I got a small sniff in class, thought I was gonna die. Felt like someone poured acid up my nose. I would say the smell very acidic, like battery acid.
Don't know how it works? Take it apart and find out!

                        Here's how it sounds.

I thought the funny salsa just cooled everything down condensing the oxygen to pack more in, no2 doesn't actually burn at all

Doh, here we go again, nitrous oxide has 2 oxygen molecules hence the NO2 (the 2). Besides cooling the inlet charge, at a certain temperature the NO2, seperates and gives off it's oxygen molecules and more oxygen means you can run more fuel, more fuel = more power.
