  • Help with noise!!!! (TL guru's challenge!)

    Hey all,

I just got my TLR like most of you know and it has developed a knock! This isn't the TL tick either (I knew someone would say that, but it's not!).

I tried using a different octane and it still didn't help. I can cruise at a steady speed and everything sounds normal, but as soon as I get the slightest bit of gas to it, the knocking starts.

What have I done so far?
    - Pulled out some oil and checked for flakes, nothing to be found
    - Noticed the coolant was very low, filled it up, still knocking!!!!!
    - Pulled off the plastic trying to find an exhaust leak, nothing there
    - Don't know much about the pair valves, let alone know where to really look. - Still trying to figure that one out
    - listened to motor with no fairings on and found a ticking in the front cylindar. It could be the valves, but the adjustments were just done not very long ago.
    - I notice the ticking is louder while in gear and not with the clutch in or the bike in neutral. Could it be the transmission? who knows, it(the transmission) feels very very strong.
    - One thing that I did notice is everyonce in a while 2nd gear bogs down and it takes a couple wicks of the throttle or waiting a few secs of it to come out of it.

Either way the guy I bought it from offered to put a new motor in it for me by Sunday, yes SUNDAY!!!!! He'd pay for the new motor and just fix the old one rather than figure out what the issue is. So I'm getting lucky in so many ways with this cause the guy I bought it from is a stand up guy and wants to make it right!!!

Didn't someone have a solution to this a while back said it was a flapper? Has your bike had the Joe-V's mod done to the airbox?

I read that too, someone had a connection to a YOSHI MEchnanic guru or something and saod do this this and that. Work out great for the guy but he never spilled the beans on what he did. He did mention the flapper valve though. who knows

Do the mod and see if it fixes it, I read it only costs a few bucks and probably a couple of hours of labor. Cheaper and faster than swapping out engines

To see if it is the flappers, just pull them out and put them back later.

How about a main/rod bearing noise...Anyone ever heard of TLs having bottom end problems?---just curious

well, the flapper valves have already been removed and from what I know of the Joe V air box mod, this is very similar.

As for the main bearing, that's how the first motor went bad. So Kyle, the guy I bought the bike from is going to get a new motor either way. I'm glad I was so lucky to get someone like him as a seller! He's going to take the knocking motor and rebuild it. That's what he does for a living so why not, he'll probably make more money!
