  • In need of quick opinion before I buy

Hey group. I am just about to go look at a used and recovered (was salvage, now rebuilt) tlr. the bike has high miles and i am curious about getting a new motor, as i will use this as a bargaining tool to lower the price. the question...

how hard is it to come by a decent used motor?

how much should one expect to pay for a used motor?

how much to do a complete rebuild of a motor?

thanks. i love this place. by the way, i am in socal, so if anyone has any specifics on places or people to see, let me know as well.

What do you mean by "high miles", how many miles does it have on it?

    Just curious.

You can find a used motor cheaper than rebuilding one.
Is there something wrong with the motor, or are you just worried because it has a lot of miles?
TL motors are generally good for some serious mileage.

this sucker has 60,000. yes, sixty-freakin-thousand miles. supposedly it runs "tight". i am heading there in about 45 minutes to ride it. this begs another question...
-if a bike is as above descibed, as i said earlier, salvage/rebuild, has full ti (yosh) system (no pcII or remap), few extra parts in a box (sprockets, a chain), how much would you pay for it?

          thanks bros (sis'?)

You didn't say what year it was, N2Wheelies has 60K on his motor (I think) and he drags it. TL motors tend to hold up very well from what I know. The rebuilt title I don't know how that is, as far as insuring it as full coverage. If they'd write off a bike with a rebuilt title in case it gets stolen or wrecked? Personally I would pay $3,000 in a heartbeat. It the rebuilt title isn't a problem and the bike is in good condition you can swap out a motor for under $900 usually. Under 4k for a TLR with Full Yosh and a new motor, sounds like a deal to me, but low ball him and see what he breaks with $$ wise.

Look at it this way, with 60,000 on the clock you KNOW the bike has been reliable transportation for someone.

You don't get milage like that if the motor hasn't been looked after...

Yep, if the motor was no good it never would have made it to 60k.

60k? Yeah it's run a while, but I would give it the once over. Run a compression check on it if you can. If you can't do it yourself, John over at special edition motorsports in El Segundo can do it for you if you want. I just had him do an inspection on a Vmax I was looking to buy and it saved me buying a roach.

So.. It's 5 years old (well 6 really now that the 2k4's are comming out), got 60k miles, and has a Salvage title? $3k MAX unless it's just PERFECT.. No scratches or anything perfect.
I've got a huge penis, You've got a huge penis, even Tim over there, yup you guessed it, huge penis. Good, now that that's out of the way, let's go ride

                              a very late update...
i did not get the bike. the guy was stuck at a number i wouldnt reach.

all is good though. i am checking out another one tomorrow. also salvaged, much less mileage, and appears to be in better condition than the above. will provide status tomorrow.

additionally, i have identified a couple other bikes that look very promising. it is the "standard" end of the riding season for quite a few people even though our weather is perfect year-round.
