  • Lemme be the one to start the rumour...

I just got a call from a buddy, Ian, who owns a car dealership and been in Japan for the past 3 weeks on car stuff, but also checking out bike stuff.

He met a guy called "Tamaki" (or something) over there from a Japanese company who manufactures OEM brake hoses, clutch & throttle cables and stuff for the Suzuki factory. This "Tamaki" guy's brother works in the Suzuki dyno room, engine design dept and he's busy with development work in the new Suzuki V-twin engine, due for release end 2004.

According to him it'll be an all new lightweight design sportsbike - frame, engine, suspension, ergonomics etc, and HEAR THIS - It's gonna be BELT DRIVE !!! and it's gonna be a full-on Duc eater sportsbike destined for racing etc, etc.

My buddy Ian deals at boardroom level and I usually get good info from him, but it could also be just a load of bullshit, I dunno... Just thought I'd let you know what I heard.

A belt driven TL... Figure that...

If it doesn't make it go fast, stop fast or turn fast, it doesn't have it.

I dunno, I like the idea of belt, so long as you aren't drag racing.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

hmmm... I dunno either... I thought a chain was more efficient than a belt.

My buddy's V-Rod is belt driven and on the bottle its putting out 145 horses and some where around 75-85 ft pounds of torque. He drags it regularly and has only fried one belt.
Might not be all that bad... Easier to maintain and they're saying the belts on the Buells are suppose to last 15000 miles or more now. Guess well have to wait and see and with the way Suzuki has been lately we'll prob be still waiting in '05!

Belts are great...self tentioning no lubing...etc...

I would ride a bike that has a belt!

How expensive would a pully gear change be vs a sprocket? I'm betting just a little more, and the belts are more expensive than chains, on hogs at least.
If belt was better than they would be racing with em............ and they ain't!

Cool... They can add pushrods and challenge Buell for outright v-twin supremacy!
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a bad example.

For racing I am sure chain is best...the yamaha Warrior that set the new "stock" drag bike record had a chain conversion. But for my purposes and I am guessing most people (except for those lucky enough to hit the track on a regular basis) a belt would be great.

But then maybe I am speaking out of my butt...

I would have to hear the pro's and con's of chain vs belt to come to a real conclution.

i can belive the belt driven concept, with modern technology im sure they can design a belt that can withstand a few pounds of torque and horsepower.i just wont be the first in line to buy a belt driven superbike.

Buells are belt and I almost think of them as superbikes...almost!

Well maybe the new ones are closer ?

they are belt driven...........they had lots of problems with the first tensioner design, but its all good now. for maintenece its good, but i love the look of a chain much better

i'm just glad to hear suzuki is doing some development of a new v-twin sportbike
