  • passenger seat fixes?

I'm having problems with a very loose rear seat (can't put my new cowl on, too loose). anyone got a fix, or should i rig a spring to the latch somehow, and call it good.
    thanks in advance

seems like the latch is not returning a fully closed condition. is there a way to tighten the latch return spring? i thought it was a common problem. definitely don't want to loose the hammerit cowl before i show it off. what did you do to yours?
      oh, and thanks

well i used to have some pics of what i did, but i recently cleaned out some files and seemed to have lost them

what i did was remove the two nuts holding the latch assy to the sub frame and push the latch out of the way. i took a rat tail file and elongated the holes over to the left (looking down at the bike, if sitting on it backwards) so the latch would have more contact on the cowl hook or the rear seat hook. just file it a little bit. i also put a spring from a ball point pen around the cable to keep it secure in the latch. good luck.

My suzuki dealer simply fitted a spring to fix the problem with mine.

i dropped the latch assembly down farther away from seat/cowl by fitting washers as spacers, so i have to push down hard to get it to click, and now it sits tight and i have to push down on the seat or cowl while turning the key to take the seat off now. also bent the metal hoops on the seat and cowl a bit so theyd be more engaged with the latch. and also wrapped some tape around the metal 'peg' on the seat and cowl so they sit snug and don't rattle around.
this all made them fit tight and got rid of the unsightly gap between the seat/cowl and bike. if none of that makes sense the way i wrote it, i could probably take some pics later on and post them. good luck.

all those fixes made good sense. i think i will rat tail the holes, and space down the latch assembly to remove the gap.
              thanks a bunch

now that i think of it, i modifyed it a bit more than i listed there above (i've done made these changes in a few different phases). the last time i actually drilled out the existing studs on the metal latch, and inserted new longer bolts into the new holes where the studs were, so i could drop the latch even lower (using more washers). it took me awhile of trial and error to get it optimized, a bit of a pain, but worth it. now the latch sits so low, that i had to take off the rubber grommets on the bottom of the cowl bracket and reverse them so the small part stuck thru hole and out the bottom of the bracket to make contact with the bracket on the bike. otherwise i couldnt push it far enough down. it seems to work fine like this. i think i left the rubber grommets on the seat off completely to get it down far enough, i can't remember exactly, i'd have to go and look.
