  • crank question

Ok, I've got my engine mostly tore down and was able to get the front cylinder to move again(it was frozen for some reason!)..

When I turn the crank by hand it turns pretty freely with no noise or anything and then it just stops dead.. is this normal? is it just building so much compression that it cant be turned by hand at this point?

if i reverse it it will do the exact same, make a few turns and then stop dead..

i want to make sure this is right before i put the engine back in the frame tonight..

    anyone?

take out the spark plugs and try to turn it again, you should be leaking all the compression out the plug whole and therefore you can see if it'll spin freely, then again, I know nothing about engines

What do you mean by "mostly tore down?" Are the heads still on? If so, do what TL4LIFE suggested: remove the spark plugs and see if it spins freely. If it doesn't or if you already have the heads removed, I think you've got a problem.

This doesn't even make sense. How do you move the front cylinder without moving the rear?

            Broken connecting rods?

He did not mention an oily mess on the floor though.

sorry..i guess i left out quite a bit... turns out it was an issue with the cam chain tensioner guide..wedging itself between the chain and the gear.. locking the motor up..

ya, the #1 cylinder wouldn't move.. the guy tried to tear it down but the piston was frozen to the cylinder wall.. so he just put it all back together and said fuggit.. a rubber mallet did the trick along with a quick honing..

its back in the frame tonight but not hooked up to anything..

going to take it over to my mechanics house in the morning to have him check the timing and all that before we fire it up..

yup, it took ONE day to pull and go through the motor.. amazingly i had all the right tools and all the correct gaskets i needed..it was an all day project though.. it took most of the night last night to get the engine 1/2 way out.. its a bastard!!
