  • TL Tankslapping

Hey all, I've got a question for all you TL gods. I have a friend who put a 97 TL engine into his 98 frame and he now is encountering tank slappers at 115 mph, the harder he accelrates, the more violent the slapper. It happens exactly at 115, not before. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had the same thing happen, if you think it's caused by the 97 engine, tire mis-alignment, etc. Thanks for your input in advance.

:dunno, I'd be re-checking the wheel balance, both front and rear, but especially the front, also the fork set-up, equal lengths through the clamps, same rebound / compression and preload settings on each leg.

He may have pulled the frame out of whack by having a spacer in the wrong place or someting too with the changeover..

I know his biggest concern is that the problem has something to do with the engine, because he never had any problems with it when he had the 98 engine in there.

Did he take the steering dampner off?

How very odd? what else did he change?

Anything is possible, but I doubt very much if it is engine related. Doesn't add up if it's a speed related problem, if it was the engine it would be rev related and happen at any speed at a certain engine rpm.

He's put something back together incorrectly, tight chain, mis-aligned chain, mis-aligned wheels, wheels out of balance, gave something a knock when disassembling / reassembling, bent the frame, list goes on and on.

A rear end problem can cause front end symptoms, but I'd go over the front end again, and again. And do a visual on the rear wheel and chain tension.

Tell him to go and buy a ball of string and double check the wheel alginment.

Ok, we checked the wheel alignment, it's good, wheel balance is ok, motor mount bolts are tight. The only what if we have is the rear tire. The tire is a race pull-off, and right now I think it's cooked because it is rock hard! It is also worn more to the right side than the left. I figure that this would make the bike trail funny, does that makes sense?? Again, thanks for the input, and any other info you guys have is appreciated.

He allways encounters a slapper at 115

Is it just me, or is he lucky to still be riding? I have never had a slapper nor do I ever want to experience one... from what I know about them is that they are very VERY hard to recover from.

Not to raise the BS flag too soon, but it just sounds fishy to me.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

is it not a damper problem...them tls need them to tame them a bit

engine problem...i dont think so...unless he mounted it on elastic
