  • should I import my full system or buy local

    What would you guys do

Im looking at the full system in either:

    M4's ($780US) ($1130aust)
    or
    Yoshi's ($700us) ($1015aust)

Plus about $130us for shipping down under plus I think I might have to pay 10% gst to get it through customs. That will bring the prices up to about $1430aust or $1304 for the system only.

Or I can pay $1550US ($2250aust) for the yoshi's + fitting and remap at my local bike shop.

Are the M4's worth $80us ($115aust) more?? is it that much of a difference??

The remap is to the std. box, apparently?? (not a pc2)

Marshall... I am a veteran of importing stuff from the USA. You got 3 options.

1a. Airmail. Costs a lot. When it gets here, if it reaches a certain $ limit, you will pay between 10% and 20% GST. They seem to pluck the rate from thin air. They have charged it on anything beyond about 120 USD, so I am thinking the tax free threshhold is $200 AUD. I think there is also another tax thing that comes in at $1000 AUD, though I've never done anything that expensive.

1b. Seamail. Takes a damn long time. Figure on 8-12 weeks. Same tax rates as airmail. Postage costs a lot less.

      2. Sea cargo. I have a guy in Melbourne who brings stuff over from Los Angeles in containers. His rates are very very reasonable. I got him to bring me a manual transmission (55kg and about the same size box as you would be needing). He charged me $50 AUD. However, tax starts at $0 for sea cargo. I declared its value at what I paid - $125 USD, and ended up paying another $90 in taxes and charges. The rates are MUCH higher than just GST. You're looking at GST + duties. He usually only takes about 6 weeks though. All you gotta do is get it to LA.

The secret with importing, is to know your vendor. If your vendor is willing to say that the exhaust belongs to you and he was just repairing it, it's almost tax free. If he can make it look used, just say it is only worth 75 USD. If you are buying brand new, you probably are going to get screwed, as I don't see a company wanting to do this for you.

If I was going to do it, I would get the M4s. Something different, and apparently they make more power and noise. I have had Yoshis before and they do look very nice though.

Hey Marshell, I think you should get a full set of Yoshi's from the US. http://www.indysuperbikes.com/Isb1/I...es%20Frame.htm has some great prices on them and you'll save even with shipping. I'm definatley going to import a set of tri ovals when I get the cash. Hope this helps.

M4 man, but look good at importing, have the vendor make up a Pro-Forma invoice with lower price or something

I voted, go local. Mostly because you got the tuning inkluded (if not, I voted wrong).
Where I live the tuning(w/ yoshi box) only (not mounting) is $300 USD.

But, you cant go wrong with M4.
Quite few have M4 outside US, and the sound.. mmm, the sound...

What taxes would be involved if you ordered the pipes and shiped them to me then I turn around and mail them to you?

The M4's are worth the $80 for a couple of more HP. Ship them to GXRKLR and have him rebox them and ship them as if he had repaired them for ya

Yeah, I have been wondering as well. The M4 is usually WAY cheaper (oh well, maybe not that much...).

If you know where I can get them cheaper, how about sharing a web address

Would customs open the box or just x-ray them looking stuff that shouldnt be there (wood, drugs etc), how can they tell if there used or not with out opening the box
