  • Rear cowl question? Paint gurus

Is this painted on or a sticker. I've heated it up but it doesn't remove like a sticker. The black portion is higher than the yellow and there is a ridge. I'm painting my baby and want to know how to remove this stripe

On my 99 it's silver and I believe paint with an eggshell clear or somethin, not sure on the 98.

I have two cowls one from a 00 and 01. The 00 is painted but on the 01 it seems to be a sticker. I can't tell if its clear coated but you can pick at with your nail

Your going to have to sand some of it off anyway even if its a sticker. Do you own a DA sander?

My 03' is stickers and so is my buddies blue 01'. I asked questions a while ago about getting stickers off my bike and got some interesting tips. The ones I did not try were belt sanders and rocks The ones I did try were WD-40, Goof Off and Goo-Gone from Wal-Mart. Some how the combination of the later three worked like a charm. Good luck!

DA = Dual Action. It's a standard bodyman's tool, usually air powered. The pivot shaft is cammed so that as the sand paper spins it also wobbles giving a nice smooth sanding job.

DON'T USE A HEAT GUN if yours is a decal. Use a hair dryer

                          use some rocks

jk, the 98 and 99 tail on the yellow model is different from the rest. The newer models have stickers, that looks like a sticker with clear coat over it. Or it might be paint under the clear:dunno for sure. The only way to find out is to start sanding it down.

Very nice. Aren't there any other 98 -99 tlr owners with some experience with this. I guess I will start sanding it down. I even though of paint stripper.
