  • Floater In My Gas Tank

this part was floating around in my gas tank anyone know what it is or what it does?
I have had body work done to the tank in the past, dent pounding, bondo, and the bike ran with thing rattling around in there with no problems.

Uhhh my guess would be its the floater that switches your gas light on!

if your tank is upside down and you look inside the tank can you see that item and where it goes. like you said it doesn't go to the fuel pump.

        seca
if that item is for the gas light do you think it works with pressure cause it certainly isn't electrical

As the float gets near the bottom of the tank it would trigger a switch or something usually found on the pump. It has been so long since I have had my pump out of the tank I am not sure.

It's not the thing that lets the vapor in and out for the canister or somethin?

I don't think it is a moving part, the tubing was ridged and located up in the top of tank near the inlet, I'm thinking vent tube

                miles b, you rock

actually it was connected to the tube that exited the take and went to the evaporation control canister. which I no longer have and it's capped off at the tank. so problem solved and so the tank goes back on.

You've got it, it's part of the emissions/evap crap on Cali models.

I Had this Happen Also!! Caution!!

I have a California '00 TLR and noticed that something was rattling around inside my tank. I mentioned it to my dealer at my 15k miles service. They were able to partially fish it out to confirm my suspicion that it was the Vapor/Fuel vent that goes to the charcoal cannister in the tail. I note that the cannister was no longer installed and the tube was just tied to the swingarm as a "overflow" drain. Lately, gas was spitting out on a regular basis, even the when tank was half full. I ending up blocking it up with a bolt. It was then necessary to drill a small hole in the gas cap to vent the tank.

During the 15k servicing the dealer noted was that gas was leaking out from the bottom of the tank where the tube was spot welded! This was of great concern and they strongly suggested that a new tank be obtained to correct this fault.

Thanks to TLPLANET members, I aware that the EPA mandates a 5 year unlimited warranty on emission control systems. Using this information, the service manager and I were able to convince American Suzuki to provide a new tank and the installation as a "good will" gesture.

I strongly recommend that you check your tank for leaks. Since you have blocked the line coming from your tank I would be careful to make certain that there is a way for air to enter it to replace the spend fuel. Otherwise, the incredible suction of the fuel pump could implode your tank - not a good thing!!
