  • Dead Battery

    I guess it had to happen, didn't ride her for a few weeks and now the battery is dead. Not real experienced in this area, can I just use the jumper cables connected to the car battery to start her up?

    can't help you on that one...but wow...few weeks and it is dead? I am surprised!

      Jumper cables probably arne't the best solution, I'd just give the battery a good trickle charge. If you have to jump it, don't start the car just hook it up and start the bike.

        Never, ever, ever jump start a motorcycle battery using an automobile. Unless you really like to throw your money away that is. It would be way cheaper to just go out and buy a brand new, premium, sealed cycle battery than having to replace the TL's rectifier. The diodes in the rectifier will be damaged if you jump start the TL with a car due to the large amperage of the automotive charging systems. You may not completely fry the rectifier right away but the damage will be done to a few diodes & it will more than likely belly up on you down the road. New rectifier from Suzuki is around $190 USD & last year there was no cheaper, aftermarket ones available. Even cheaper alternative is a buying a trickle charger, $15 USD for the ones you manually switch on/off & $25 USD for the "smart" ones that turn themselves off when your battery is fully charged. I have tried push starting a dead TL helping out a friend at the track & good luck is all I can say. Two big ass TL pistons plus an electric fuel pump with FI make this an extremely difficult proposition as well.

          Jump starting is not the best solution on any vehicle these days, large amounts of current flowing and rapidly changing voltages can cause permanent damage easly if your unlucky. I would fear for the ECU far more than the regulator as regs are pretty robust electricaly, on the subject of regs they are not that high tech, just a shunt regulator for permanent magnet type alternators and any regulator of this type matched to the alternator output will work. You may have to adapt the connection however, give Electrex in the USA a call to see what they offer, i just go to the wreckers and buy what they have on hand. Top dollar i would pay for a regulator is about US$70 new, more usual is about US$35 used.

          BTW have you seen where they mount the reg on the SV1000? On the side of the engine cylinder!! water temp should keep that area at about 100C max, but i would have thought there was a better place.

            If the battery wouldnt hold a charge for a couple of weeks, i would say its time for a new battery. motorcycle batteries arent as robust as car batteries, and once they are dead like that, they never really recover imho

                I had the same problem, now I have a battery tender. Mine came with alligator clips and ring terminals. I used the ring terminals and ran the wire inside the fairing allmost to the clutch cover. Now, when I know I'm not going to ride for awhile, I just plug the bike in and I know it'll start when I get to ride again!!

                  Or try charging the battery until it is fully charged (using a mc charger as described earlier) then checking the TL's charging system &/or the TL's rectifier if you have a multitester & a manual. Chances are that these things are OK, but the reason I know the price of a new rectifier is my 97' TLS rectifier bellyed up last year. I figured that the stock battery was the culprit as it was fully charged 3 times and after a couple of weeks (with a few rides in between) the battery was dead. Five years for the original battery was great I figured & so I bought a new one. A few weeks later the fully charged new battery did the same thing! This time I checked the charging system (was OK) after recharging the battery & then checked the rectifier (2 open circuits in the diodes - not good). Replaced the rectifier & problem disappeared. In fact I put the old battery back in after recharging it & it worked fine. Hmm

                  No, I did not jump start the TL using a car battery. Could have been due to regularly running the bike at sustained high rpm while running track days? But I have heard that "don't jump start" story for years & finally ran into a bike whose owner did this regularly. He kept buying new batteries as they kept dying on him & repeatedly went ahead & jumped started the bike (with cars) in order to make it home. First thing we did was recharge the battery & then checked the rectifier which was fried big time. Replaced the rectifier & the bike ran fine - apparently for the first time in years. The owner was overcome by joy & rushed out & bought a trickle charger the next day...

                      Shindengen rectifier/regulator are a six pulse rectifier, hence the diode check is straight forward the phase controlled shunt SCR's are not so easly checked without a test setup. What normaly causes semiconductor failure in these motorcycles is thermal cyclic stress or poor mounting ( original CBR1000 legendary reg failiure ). What you need to be aware of is load dumping from the donor car system -80V is possible if the engine is turned off first. As for battery tenders what scares me is the unfused leads to the battery itself, after warning of this elswhere i was sent a picture of just such an accident that nearly burned down the garage and bikes inside, use fault current limiters in the connection as close to the battery as possible if left unattended.

                        You can jump start off of a car battery so long as the car is not running or the car's system isn't pulling any current. Best way to do this is to disconnect the neg terminal on the car battery before you jumper cable them.

                          Okay, so I'm having the same problem. Now my battery has died before (couple times) and I hooked it up to the charger and did a rapid charge (probably shouldn't did that) while it was still connected to the bike (probably shouldn't have done that either). Could this have fried my rectifier? After that I bought a new battery, charged it and 2 weeks later today not enough juice to start it.

                              Check the output of your stator...then check the rectifier...I thought I had a bad battery, checked the rectifier and it showed low voltage...checked the stator and it was junk!
