  • A word on the fine art of picture whoring

Recent developments prodded me to share some tips on posting JPEG photos. Check out the photos below of me eating it on my wakeboard. Truth is, I will use any excuse to post wakeboarding pics.

The attached photo is pretty darn small eh? It was made using no "compression" and has a file size of 66.5KB. Pretty reasonable for modem users, but darn, that is a small photo eh?

Now we take the same photo and use some compression. This reduces image quality (nothing in life is free) but you get a larger picture for the same file size. You can find a balance where the reduced quality is not terribly noticable, leaving you with a bigger pic.

This photo has a file size of 37 kb, which is half the size of the previous "small" picture. I was limited by the board's policy of a max size of 640x480. If this pic was the same file size as the previous one, I could have made it fill your 17" monitor at 800X600 or perhaps even 1024X768. It is not the size of the picture itself, it is the file size that is a problem. For God's sake, don't post bitmaps, they are huge. The larger photo would probably be about 800 KB as a bitmap.

In terms of your music collection, think of JPEG files as MP3 files, vs. Bitmaps as normal WAV files and the quality slider for the JPEG as the MP3 file bitrate. Oh hell, probably lost some of ya worse with that bit of geekery.

At any rate, Windows Paint lets you adjust the quality of JPEGs under options. I like Irfanview, which is a free download and has lots of neat picture whoring features. Check it out at http://www.irfanview.com

A bit of tweaking and we can all enjoy Douglike picture whoring, without bringing the dial up modems to a comlete crawl

You need a camera for these photo things, right?

Before someone slaps me with a trout as I probably should have added this to Kat's thread about image posting in the pictures folder, but I thought more folks would see it here near the "adios" thread.

Always trying to help. Now if someone could sit down with me for a few hours with Photoshop, watch out!

I'm with 'ya.. but I think it SHOULD be added there.. I forgot all about compression ratio...

One step at a time. We do not want too many picture whores, with bandwidth to burn, running amok
