  • Some pics of my hybrid Penske

Just some snapshots of my hybrid Penske setup...found a cheap Lindemann Penske on Ebay but the reservoir was damaged, rashed, and wouldn't hold nitrogen. Ebay reservoirs were going for about as much as the shock so I was originally going to cut the resevoir down, re-groove, it for the wire lock and install but I didn't want to decrease reservoir volume or mess with the retaining groove on a pressure vessel. Then I found a triple-click side reservoir on another shock that went cheap. After a battle with red loctite, my propane torch, vise, and strap wrench won out. A little suspension fluid and this is what I ended up with. There was some wear in the anodize around the "home" position of the piston in the damper body. I didn't pull out the dial bore guage to really check if it was measurable. I flipped the body so the piston rests on a fresher area. Had about $300 in the damper but then I blew the budget with a new Traxxion Ti spring. The Ti spring is a bit larger diameter than the Hyperco that I got with the damper and interfered with the stock undertray (I ended up cracking an undertray mount) so I'm using my "track" subframe for now. The stock rear brake reservoir interfered with easy preload adjustment so I used a Vanzuki reservoir from my S and ordered a blue one to switch out. Had problems with the way I had my brake line mounted and the reservoir cap, so I had to fab a new rear line as well (replaceing the blue one in the pic). The LE link also rubbed my hugger so I'm running huggerless 'till I find a solution for that. Overall very happy with the install and it saved about 7lbs (3.2kg) over the stock setup.

Nice work, it looks like the one that I sold to 6r tlr.

You can rotate that banjo on the rear master, so the line runs straight down the back of the master, no where near the cup.
Hopefully, that is what you did with the new line.

Funny Van...I was thinking the same thing. That was a beautiful setup with the Ti spring.

You can go to a gas supply shop and buy a small bottle, but the cost of the bottle is pretty expensive.( cheap to do if you already have a bottle laying around you can have filled) you can also go to any MOTO shop that does suspension, I know of 5 within 30 mins of me, and know of atleast 2 in Ca, just not sure how far they are away from you. But one is Kyle racing, and the other is lindemann's which is the guy who builds the penskes for us originally.

Not true, he just ordered them from Penske, with his valve recipe in them and had a link made and put them in the same box.

Wow, learn something new everyday. When i ordered my double he said, " this is the last batch of links I'm making. I will get the shock done and send it out." So I thought he did the whole thing, cause I know you can't get a new penske for the tl from anywhere but him. I tried all over when I ordered mine, then called him and found out he had just made a couple more links, so I had gotten lucky.

Thanks Van, that shock looks great is it all Penske parts? Certainly more elegant than some of the hose clamp setups I've seen. I wonder why Lindemann didn't sell them in that configuration?

Nitrogen is offered at many tire shops now, try Costco as mentioned by another poster some time ago. Also any hydraulic shop that does accumulator work will be set up to handle a shock.

Yes, it is all Penske parts. They were not offering this style of reservoir yet, back in 98-99 and even if they were I'm sure they would have been whining about it is too close to the rear exhaust pipe, but I like the clean look. I hate those reservoir lines. If the heat was a real concern, the pipe could be ceramic coated or wrapped and I have even seen reservoir heat shield on Ducati's, since they are in the same position.

I would not have sold this one if it was black. I intend to build another one, all black.

So what rate ti spring did you guys use? Van looks like he's using lindemann's linkage, whereas ABN is using stock?

Traxxion only had lighter-rate ti springs when I called. I'm using a Bitubo with its too-light stock spring AND a light-rate Traxxion ti helper spring on an ohlins. The Bitubo is adjusted for very little damping and is really a slightly-damped SOAS, on the stock linkage. The Ohlins spring is just a light ti helper spring, and the Ohlins does most of the damping, on no linkage just the modified Ohlins brackets. I wanted an even lighter-rate ti spring, but they ran out.

It's about control skill; this is a motorized dance for joy and not Russian roulette.
