  • Mechanical Seal and Washer install??

Got the new seals and was wondering something about the white plastic with rubber seal. my old one I took off had white side facing the mechanical seal. My question is,After looking at the black and white photos got me thinking is that the way it goes or is the rubber side suppose to face the seal??
Trying to make sure I get it right this time and get this fixed right. Thanks

thr hard ceramic side goes in the rubber goes to the impellor

put some 3 bond on the shaft ( sparingly ) and use a new rubber washer under the nut if you got one or a bit of 3bond on the old one.

Re: Mechanical Seal and Washer install??

i just did this for the 3rd time last night. finally got it right. i used bronze high temp gasket maker and it finally did the trick. i took my time instead of rushing which helped too heres a quick list of tips...

clean off all gasket surfaces well. use brake cleaner if you have some.

i put the engine cover gasket on a paper towel and put a thin coat around all the holes that coolant passes through, put it on the impeller bolt with the rubber seal, and i put it around the oil seal and mechanical seal before pressing those in. i also put a tiny little dab here and there around the perimeter of the gasket to hold it on the cover while i slid the dowls into the engine/cover and lined it up to put the bolts in.

lube up the seals with some oil or vaseline, and use steel wool or emory or a smooth sandpaper to clean up the waterpump shaft, then i used a corner of one of the bags the seals were in to put over the shaft, slip the whole thing on and gently wiggle the bag out.

        and the most important part

USE A FOOT OR INCH LB WRENCH!!!

first two times i over tightened the impeller bolt and cracked the mechanical and impeller seals. they are ceramic not plastic. and having to wait another week+ to get your seals again fricken sucks. my bike was sitting for a month due to not taking my time, messing it up and having to wait for new parts to show

also make sure to give a few minutes for the gasket sealer to set up, i let mine sit while i ran to the store to get oil and coolant.

just take your time as you will be much happier when it gets done right and isnt leaking

Yeah this is killing me. Idling it drips ,rev it and it pours. Was thinking of putting some gasket maker on it to see if that would help keep from mechanical seal from leaking.Hopefully this time will be the one.lol Thanks for the info and help

if it leaks that bad you probably damaged it fitting it.

the spring is not to be touched during the installation.

use a socket that spans the lip area and tap it in carefully.

Re: Mechanical Seal and Washer install??

Guys I replaced my seal seven times before I finally found out that the previous owner, having thge seal fail pulled her apart and went through a couple of seals before he gave up and filled the weep hole with gasket goo and sold it to me.

Look to make this a short story he had failed to keep the rubber washer and spring washer that seal the impeller bolt to the shaft and the impeller. Mine was never leaking from the mechanical seal failing, rather past the bolt holding the impeller in place.

Dam fool cost me a shit load and it explains why I got her so cheap......having said that i figured out the problem and havent had one since.

That could be read wrong Stu, the ceramic side makes contact with the mechanical seal in the clutch cover not the rubber side just to make it clear.

Always use a new rubber backed washer under the impellor bolt as 9 times out of 10 that is why it leaks, not the mechanical seal.

They one they sent me last time was a little smaller than the stock one. The one I got this time local is the same as the first one(bigger) than the one Ive got now on the bike. Done everything the manual said when I installed everything last time. So the washer being smaller is likely the cause of my leak. Dang it..lol

Well so far so good. Run the bike three times up to 3-4000 rpm and no leaking. The first rubber washer I ordered was a little smaller,The one I bought local was correct size. The other one wouldnt cover the end completely. And there was some play in impellar. The new one covered end and stopped the free play. so hopefully it is finally fixed. Thanks all for the input. Now if I could just get the dang title.lol
