I searched and found a post from March, but thought I would start a new thread. I ran across a guy last week on eBay offering what amounts to an aluminum plate that mounts in place of the passenger seat. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...#ht_500wt_1182
Now, I don't plan on loading up NEAR as much stuff as this guy did in the auction picture, but you get the idea. I'm thinking I might fab up a vertical bracket for the rear part of the plate to allow me to bungie around an item like a tail truck bag or whatever. If not, it at least offers a nice, flat surface for my laptop to rest on in the tail bag. I bent a MacBook chassis year before last strapping it down to cushioned seat.
At any rate, the bracket looks acceptably thick for the chore. It's got ten bungie hook cutouts around the perimeter, and has some sort of black powder coat finish on the shelf itself. The brackets that interface with the seat latch are steel, and quite a bit heftier than the shelf itself. Really looks like a first-rate product to me. Makes me want to do a road trip.
I haven't used it yet, but I can't imagine it not being up to the task.
YMMV,
