  • Which one to buy? TLS or TLR?

I have always wanted a TL and I am now in the position to get one.

But which one - a TLS ot TLR?

The bike will be a play thing as I have another bike for everyday use. I have had a VTR before and love the V-Twin torque/power characteristics. I'm quite an expereiced rider and have a fast but smooth style.

I know the choice may well be down to personal preferences, but would be happy to hear your thoughts/views to help me make a decision.

    Cheers

    Andy

The R is faster..... lol, had to be the first to say it. More or less you should choose one based on looks as there isn't much difference between them. and whatever is, you will modify and change anyways. Just after you buy, hide your wallet.

After being faced with the same decision, I did some research on the two. The thing that sealed the deal on the R is the forged rods and pistons. Stronger frame, better brakes, and it's stunning good looks are perks, too.

The S guys are a quirky bunch. Don't let 'em persuade you otherwise....

Personally.........an S for me, more character, lighter, nicer looks, and red as its the faster one but wait........ i have one so im going to be biased
Whatever you decide both are great bikes in their own right apart from the R's back end Good hunting and get ready to mod the hell out of whatever one you decide, the mod list for these machines is never ending

Forged pistons and rods haven't stopped me from logging over 45,000 miles on the S so far....and there's no sign of it stopping other than the fact that I have other bikes to ride now. When forcing power into her (super/turbo/nitro) I can't argue against the forged components but for bolt-on tuners it's really not an issue.

Stronger frame? Meh. Arguable....the original 97 frame was the worst offender but my 98 frame is holding up pretty well....

Better brakes? Slightly. I'll admit the first thing I did to my S was throw some 6-pots on her. I think the steel lines did more but I digress.

Stunning good looks? Really? How many times do you hear "Where did you get that dual exhaust for your GSXR?"?

S riders are quirky when viewed through the eyes of dillusional mental case R riders .

every TLS I've seen at the track, I've only seen them briefly, as they were quickly placed behind my TLR.

...oh and Frank, I hear the dual pipes thing from time to time too!

Ummmmm, I would say the R simply because . I think the R is the most stunning bike I have ever laid eyes on. She makes me feel like Billy Bad Ass whenever I get on her. I do agree with the rest of the guys, you can not go wrong either way. No matter what you decide, welcome to the Family.

Cheers folks and keep the comments coming.

Based in the West Midlands - so can't get to the one mentioned above!

Hopefully looking at a 2000 TLS tomorrow - wavy disks, race cans, power commander - I'll let you know how it goes!!

Re: Which one to buy? TLS or TLR?

Having owned both, I wish my current TLR were another TLS, but part of that love was because my TLS was a '97 with some real power, and I also hated some '97 problems (clutch, clutch cover, jerky throttle response). I like the TLS torque at lower RPM, I love the TLS trellis-type frame in aluminum, I love that it's really unique, I like the half-fairing, I like that it doesn't look at all like a Hayabusa or GSXR. In british racing green it looks kind of like a big ant from the front. I like it even with a mini-chin lower fairing too. I like its rounded body shapes. I like the rear tail compared to the TLR. I really really love the shape of the TLS fuel tank! I like the lighter weight of the TLS. I think it makes a uniquely beautiful naked streetfighter if you get tired of the bodywork. Part of my prejudice is because my TLR had less balls than my '97 TLS at street RPM and my TLS had really nice CF wheels, and I may feel different when I get my reworked TLR engine back and change the gearing a bit. My prejudice might have been opposite if my '97 TLS had a trans output bearing failure or a big-end bearing failure due to the crank being fed from only one end. I did have a lot of problems specific to the '97. And the stock TLS airbox intake is just terrible.

Perhaps my ideal TL for the street is a late-model TLS (not a '97) streetfighter with major airbox mods, conservative cams, ported late-model TL heads, Kendall Berg sleeved big-bore, and TLR wiring harness, TLR injection and TLR ECU with its higher redline.

Or perhaps I'd just start with an SV1000 and put on TL heads, a GSXR fork and Kendall Berg sleeved big-bore.

If I was buying a stock commuter, I'd get a late-model TLS, the later the year the better. In black. Just one opinion. Like women, there's beautiful individuals in several categories.

I do wish I had the money to buy n2wheelies TLS. It's like a sister to my old '97 but has all the '97 problems eliminated.
