Re: side mounted steerig dampers
On my TLs I had the early very long Hyperpro mounted along the upper frame rail to a fancy clamp on the fork leg. It worked exceptionally well! The longer damper means there's less hydraulic play associated with actuating the Hyperpro velocity-sensitive valve. IMHO it was also stronger, able to handle more force. That's how most early dampers originally were mounted. Slightly heavier, installed wrong it might pinch your fingers or something. I put the damper's rod heim to the frame and the damper's body clamp to the fork so it was tucked in close to the frame and out of the way. On the TLS I even made a bracket around the frame that used some stock holes in the frame. With the carbon fiber wheels it worked VERY nicely, at low speeds it felt like no dmaper at all.
But now the problem is finding a damper as good in such a long length. It's about control skill; this is a motorized dance for joy and not Russian roulette.

Re: side mounted steerig dampers
allmost all brands has side mounted type dampers, but that doesn't matter, what matters is how/where you can fix the damper ?MY BIKE: 1998 TLS 107.52 Hp 71 lb-ft.

Re: side mounted steerig dampers
Yes, I run side mounted on the 1040
M8 Steel Rivnut into the frame spar and a recessed spacer to spread the load onto the frame spar rather than just the head of the rivnut.
