180 vs. 190 for the rear
Wasn't sure if this thread is posted somewhere else in here, but nevertheless... I was told to get rid of my 190's in the rear and slap on a 180 instead? Why so and what good or bad will it do for me? I heard this from a couple of different sources. Thanks for the replies." The more stickers I put on.. The faster my bike goes..."Tags: None

The 180 is a "thinner" tire, with a higher profile i believe.... because of this, it will allow you to roll off the center of the tire and onto the edge faster. It will also allow you to get back up and over to the other edge faster.
the 180 is a whole different ball game in comparison to the 190... I recently made the switch and I don't think i would go back if you paid me. (ok, for enough money i'd do most anything)
I was told that the bike might lose traction a little more often, but I have not experienced this.
PS - I am no expert, but just regurgitating what i was told.

I've seen a lot about dropping down to a 180, but have also read that a 180 is undersized on a 6" rim - some tyre companies won't recommend it for road use. I've got a 190 Avon AV40 sport on my TLs which works well on the road (though not for long - 2k miles or so......) and is very narrow for a 190. It only measures 185mm overall on the rim and steers better than the 180 MEz3 that was on there before it.
Thing is, tyre choice is very subjective !!

I also switched to a 180 and mostly ride the twisties. I wont go back to the 190 unless it is free. I have nere had the 180 lose traction I I ride my bike hard. I would say go for it if ya prefer the 190 after trying you can always go back. Trying different things can only improve your riding ability and helps you tune your bike to your style!http://media.damnfunnypictures.com/dfp/fg_14.gif

if you're particularly hard on exits, a 190 would be best. if not, a 180 is fine for all uses. if you want best of both worlds, get a 190/55. 190 contact patch w/ 55 height for turn in. i dunno if they come in street compound.AFM #715

I am constantly studying my tires after track sessions and hard trips up my favorite mountain. With the 180 it was obvious that as hard as I was rolling on the throttle at the apex, I had a very small contact patch, which left me feeling quite unsure of my ability to go wide open. So with that I changed to the 190/55, now I have a much larger contact patch at full lean and under hard power and I feel better about it mentally. I believe that if you feel uncomfortable with anything about your bike or your mental set, you should re-evaluate your current situation and change to what makes you feel confident. Just my .02 cents worth!I don't notice any difference between the 190/55 and the 180/55 at all. Steering turn in is still just as quick, and rollover to the opposite side is still just as easy to achieve.

One would think a 180 would be stretched over the rim making fall in actually less (less profile, flatter contour). I think alot has ta do with the profile of tread, have liked some 180's, not liked others. Currently got a 190 pilot and love it, lays into corners nice and flicks just fine for me.

on a tls some 180s (208 gp) will rub on the rear hugger if you have one installed. just means you would need to place a couple washers under the hugger to space it up a little bit

I had a the Michelin Pilot sport II 180/50 on the rear. I recently changed to a Michelin Pilot sport II 190/55. The change is unbelievable. THe bike turns in far better than before, you can get on the gas faster out of the turn and the overall feel is more sure footed than with the 180.
I'm suitably impressed...............
