Motor Comparo/Help
I have been reading up on the motor that my '01' TLS has and have found some interesting facts.Aparrently the motor that was in the '97' bike had more HP than the newer models (125 avg vs. 108 avg).If anyone else has read or knows any other information about this please shed some light on this subject. Also if you know what Suzuki did to restrict this motor any details would be appreciated."What's it feel like to ride at 200mph"
"It's similar to doing 199mph"

If the ECU is different and the cams ,I wonder if any of the parts changed were swappable with the newer motors. To be able to get the same (125)output as that older motor would be nice considering most of us are trying to reach that figure with the newer motor using our mods and aftermarket perf parts."What's it feel like to ride at 200mph"

There shouldn't be many of the original ECU's out there, they were all recalled.
Nothing that a PCII shouldn't be able to defeat anyway. TLR cams should fit without too many drama's I believe. (There maybe a difference in the gears, not sure though). Some one here will definitely know."I spent most of my money on Scotch, women and cigarettes. The rest I just wasted"Comment

From what I remember reading the cams have different part numbers but are identical anyway. Same duration and lift etc. Definately a different ecu like Steve said, and maybe different timing but nothing a PCII can't fix. A Timing Retard Eliminator (TRE) would'nt go astray either. I also believe the hp numbers "claimed" by Suzuki were 117hp for the 97 model and 108hp for the 98" onwards, whether that is at the wheel or the crank I don't know although manufacturers are usually quite optimistic with this number. My 00" model makes 122hp at the wheel on a Dyno Dynamics and Dynojet dyno, with a full exhaust, PCII and a K&N air filter, with 7hp lost throught the drivetrain that equals 129 at the crank. Therefore I tend to believe the main difference between models is just the ecu. There are no internal engine differences that I know of. I did however follow this break-in procedure.

I saw that article, too. There is no way that my '97 TLS ever made 125. It's a great bike, but it wasn't ever up in that range.MRA Rider Rep; '99, '03, & '05 MRA SuperTwins GTO champ; Big Stick RacingComment
