  • Help needed (bad idle)

A couple of nights ago it started to rain heavily as I rode to the garage where I keep my Tiller, she ran good as always though, no problem, parked her and went home. Today I took her out for a ride and when I fired her up the idle immediately went up to 2500 rpm without pulling on the lever on the left handlebar. I decided to go anyway, and after a little while I noticed the idle was very low, around 900 rpm. Theres a plastic adjuster mounted to the frame below the tank on the left side which I usually use for adjusting the idle, it had no effect whatsoever turning that thing.

I could however adjust the idle with the lever on the left handlebar, so I´ve ridden all day with the lever in half-full position to keep the idle up. If I push it down to where I usually have it when riding the rpms fall to 800-900 and then the motor dies.

    What could be the problem??
Is there a sensor or something that got messed up by the rain the other night? Where should I start looking? :dunno

Other than the idle she runs great.

    Thanx guys.

Sounds like a Blue and White issue to me

On a serious note I wouldn't advise using your Fast Idle lever unless its necessary like for track days ect... You may need to re Map it.

I suggest pulling your airbox off and looking closely at the throttle bodies. Make sure everything is lubed up and free of dirt. Also, check your cables(fast idle and throttle), for kinks.

Ditto, check the linkage for dirt, the cable for kinks. Lube the cable at both ends (open up the handle bar switch and drip some light weight lube down into the cable and work the lever back and forth). Alot of the tls I see have this problem with the cable getting gummed up and not moving through its full range of motion.

*Have checked the airfilter, looks ok.

*Have checked the airtemp sensor, looks ok.

*Have lubed the wire to the idle adjuster, looks ok.

Still no idle without putting the adjuster lever about halfway open....

Lasse: Haven´t checked the TRE yet, seemed far fetched but now I will remove it to make sure.

            More ideas??

            Thanx.

could the tre have gotten wet and shorted causing the ecu to use the wrong map?

Thanx. Will check both TRE and TPS.
Any other ideas?, appreciate the input.

Any other sensors involved that I should check? Maybe the rain f***ed it up?

i think your blinker fluid is low. that's why it's idling bad. I have a gallon of it for $20 + ship if interested

rain is known to play hell on muffler bearings. if it wasnt spinning smoothly it would cause extra backpressure and dog the motor.
