  • Rear Spring preload TLS

In terms of rear spring preload on a TLS what would you recommend. I'm 85kg (+-190lbs). At present the preload on the rear spring is sitting at about 7mm of thread showing above the top lock nut.Rider Sag is about 35mm at the rear and 4mm Static Sag.

I'm looking for a ball park figure to aim for, as it is such a bitch to get that spring in and out.

The front I will set to balance the rear, once I've got that setup.

    thanks
    Richard

Don't worry about the preload. Set the sag instead. If it feels mushy or soft, go to a stiffer spring. I usually set the sag at 1/3 of the total travel. Good rule-of-thumb for any bike.

      Hi Chris
Next question, any idea of the distance of the total travel on the rear spring?

PS thanks for the help with revalving info on the front shocks.

        Hi Richard,

Don't worry about the spring travel. Measure from you rear axle center to a stationary spot on the frame underneath the tail. With the rear suspension fully extended up, measure it. You may have to pull up a little to get it fully extended. Then get on in your normal riding position and measure it again using the same measuring spots. The difference is your sag. Adjust your spring until it is set at around 30-35mm. You will need two people to do this. Start there. It should be real close.

Richard, seems like you have exactly the amount of sag ama530 suggests.

(I have static of 0mm and 20mm when on it for the rear, that's with the spring preload at the original setting.)

OK, not trying to be a smart or dumb ass, but isn't the preload what you set to adjust the sag?

I thought that too David, and after reading it several times, I came to the conclusion that he meant don't worry about the preload measurement as such, just adjust it to get the correct sag

So it should read "don't worry about the preload measurements. Set the sag.." :dunno
